Sixty females of Pimelodus albicans were collected from the port area of Buenos Aires between Oct/90 and Feb/92 and their ovaries were fixed in Bouin`s fluid and included in paraffin. Afterwards 5-8 µm thick seriate sections were cut and stained with H&E, Alcian blue, Mallory`s and PAS. Both, cellular and nuclear average diameters were obtained for predetermined oocyte populations, according to their growing stages. A Nucleoplasmatic Index was then calculated: (Nuclear Vol/ Cell. Vol. - Nuclear Vol. ) x 100 assuming that both volumes were spheric-like. The indexes tested through 't' test, showed significant differences at (P < 0.01). This allow us to classify the oocytes as. OV.0 (or Oogonia), OV.1 (or Cromatine-Nucleolar), OV.2 (or Perinucleolar-basofilic), OV.3 (or Yolk-Nucleus) and OV.at (or Atresic). This classification is supported by hystochemical differences observed microscopically. The observations have shown that P. albicans has an asyncronous (metacronous) oocyte developing schedule.
