Arqueological findings of the past decade draw a provocative picture of the first American man and his society. Who was the first American man and where did he come from? How long ago did he arrive... and how did he live? At last, we are able to piece together the "American Dawn" in all its engrossing complexity- a story that completely contradicts the beliefs so widely held by archaeologists as little as ten years ago. Louis A. Brennan has accomplished a complete survey of American prehistory based on radical evidence obtained in the last decade, and the result is as surprising as it is compelling, witty, and factual. Comparing yesterday's archaeological theses with today's model of American prehistory, the author constructs a remarkable picture of the first American man and the first American community. How did he look, act, exist? What tools did he use, what food did he eat, what clothes did he wear? How did he communicate? How, in fact, did the American civilization develop? Now for the first time, these questions can be answered. Thanks to recent spectacular advances in dating techniques (C 14 and other methods explained in the text), we are able to picture America's earliest settlers in their natural habitat and lifestyle. Brennan traces the first Americans back to the very beginnings of man, in Olduvai Gorge, East Africa, giving cohesive and wide-ranging commentary on the revolutionary discoveries of eminent archaeologists (such as Leakey and Dart in Africa) and the new world-picture that has evolved over the past decade. But the reader, too, is an explorer, learning how much can be revealed from a clamshell in Croton, New York; from an arrowhead in New Mexico; or from a tree in California. He discovers too the question of environmental determinism, the role played by climate and surroundings in the regional development of American man. And he returns to his beginnings, identity, and primitive traditions with a reawakened knowledge of this new world, his home. |
