Three general types of epithelial mucosubstances were identified and in broad terms were recognized as neutral mucosubstances, sulfated acid mucosubstances and nonsulfated acid mucosubstances. The mocous cells of the esophageal epithelium contained neutral and acid mucosubstances, and the histochemical results identified two mocous cell types. The superficial epithelial cells of the cardiac stomach produced principally neutral mucosubstances. The epithelial cells of pyloric stomach contained neutral mucosubstances in association with small amounts of nonsulfated mucosubstances. The mucous cells of the intestine contained neutral and acid mucosubstances, the carboxyl groups were more abundant, although small amounts of sulfate groups were present.
