The first describes the various structures, including those no longer visible on the surface, with the help of detailed plans and numerous photographs, many of them illustrating points of construction never previously recorded. The second gives the evidence for the sequence of buildings and the dates of the various phases; and the third discusses the techniques used for transporting, tooling, and erecting the stones. The fourth section surveys what is known of the various prehistoric communities which contributed to the buildings of Stonehenge; and the fifth, necessarily more speculative attempts to interpret the monument in terms of changing religious beliefs and of social and political organization.
