They adhere strongly to the supports by means of short epidermal hairs formed opposite them. The terrestrial roots are long, hairy and branched and grow in the leaf litter. The short supportive roots and the aerial portions of the terrestrial roots have thick-walled dermal tissues to limit evaporation. The terrestrial portions are relatively thin-walled. The persistent epidermal hairs of the uniseriate epidermis function as a velamen.
