The present study is based on the analysis of stomach contents of 142 specimens belonging to six species of fish captured between July 1999 and June 2000, in the following locations: Piranhas Açu river (Alto do Rodrigues, São Rafael and Açu) and Corredor Dam (Martins), in the State of Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil. Hooks, sieves, staked gill and cast nets were used as capturing instruments. Total length (cm), total weight and stomach weight (0.1 g.). The stomachs were removed and fixed in 5% formaldehyde and subsequently transferred to 70% alcohol, where they underwent occurrence (Of) and volumetric (Vf) analysis. The Feeding Index (FI) was applied to the frequency of occurrence and volume. The food items were separated into four groups: mollusks, crustaceans, insects and fish. Material ingested, sand and other organisms represented an insignificant portion of the total analyzed. Based on these results, it is concluded that the fish studied were predominantly generalist carnivores consuming a diet composed mainly of elements of native origin
