Resúmen A partir de un brote epidémico de diarreas, postración y muerte en potrillos se realizó el estudio de muestras de materia fecal de 40 animales sin signos clínicos para revelar el estado de portación y el grado de infección del establecimiento. De las 40 materias fecales sembradas, solamente en tres no se detectó la presencia de Salmonella spp. La serotipificación de las cepas dio como resultado Salmonella enterica sp. enterica serovar Typhimurium, realizada en el INEI ANLIS "Dr. Carlos G. Malbrán". A partir de la cepa aislada se preparó el Antígeno somático y flagelar para el diagnóstico por seroaglutinación. De un total de 40 sueros, 36 (90 %) de los animales dieron positivos al antígeno flagelar y 32 (80 %) al somático. Los portadores de salmonellas son particularmente difíciles de identificar, porque eliminan las bacterias en forma intermitente sin signos de la enfermedad. Si uno o más caballos dan positivo se considera al establecimiento positivo. Es importante recalcar la fuerte resistencia de las cepas a la sulfa+trimetroprima, muy raro en esta especie bacteriana, y siendo este uno de los quimioterápicos de mayor uso para el tratamiento de salmonelosis en herbívoros. Summary From an epidemic outbreak in foals, with diarrhea, prostration and death, samples of faeces were taken from 40 asymptomatic animals in order to know the shed and infection rate of the farm. From the 40 coprocultures Salmonella enterica sp enterica serovar Tiphymurium were isolated and only 3 foals remain negative. The typification was done at the INEI ANLIS Dr. Carlos Malbrán. From the Salmonella isolated was prepared somatic and flagella antigen for sera agglutination test. From the 40 sera tested 36 (90%) were positive to the flagella antigen and 32 (80%) to the somatic one. The carriers of Salmonella are particular difficult to detect as the shed Salmonella in an intermittent way without any signs of illness. If one or more horses are positive we should consider all the animals as carriers. It is important to show the resistant of all the strains to sulfa+trimetroprim that is very unusual in the Salmonella group.
