Abstract: Because during stress response, neuroendocrine and metabolic significant changes take place, which reflects in blood metabolite concentrations, biochemical analyses are used in stress as indirect evaluation indicators. Its importance keeps relation with several factors (characteristic of the stressor, guest response and context situation). However, many authors have questioned the importance of the biochemical analyses in the stress response that is prolonged in time. In this work, the behaviour of some biochemical variables has been evaluated in chickens submitted to a stressful maneuver, performed during the production cycle, compared to control birds that were not manipulated. At slaughtering (day 50) blood samples were taken, and several biochemical variables were quantified, showing the following results: glucose 2.11±0.50 vs 2.12±0.36 g/l; total proteins 4.00±0.65 vs 3.86±0.45 g/dl; albumin 1.57±0.20 vs 1.59±0.33 g/dl; globulin 1.58±0.22 vs 1.58±0.57 g/dl; uric acid 84.7±27.1 vs 84.9±34.8 mg/l; triglycerides 049±0.23 vs 0.53±0.27 g/l and total cholesterol 1.44±0.15 vs 1.43±0.18 g/l for treated and control respectively. There were not significant differences (p < 0.05) in the averages of dependent variables; this is in concordance with observations made by other authors, who state that most of the blood metabolites suffer substantial modifications during acute stress or at the beginning of chronic stress, then returning to their basal values.
