Abstract: To compare the feeding value of high moisture sorghum grain silage used alone or together with whole cottonseed or urea, an experiment of winter supplementation under pasture conditions, was carried out. Weaned heifers of 180 kg BW were used. Heifers were classified by phenotype (Zebu and British types) and randomly assigned to four treatments. They were kept on Dichantium caricosum pastures, at a stocking rate of 2.25 heifers/ha. Treatments were: a) high moisture sorghum grain alone (HMS, n=10); b) HMS+whole cottonseed (HMS+WCS, n=16); c) HMS+urea (HMS+U, n=16) and d) Control without supplementation (CON, n=10). Supplements were offered six times a week during 6 months and they were iso-energetic (3 Mcal ME per time offered, equivalent to 2.6 Mcal ME per heifer/day). Supplement CP were: 9% (HMS) and 14.6% (HMS+WCS and HMS+U). Shrunk body weight, body condition score (1-9 scale), thoracic perimeter, and hip height were taken at the beginning and the end of the experiment. Monthly, full body weigh and blood from jugular vein were obtained. Serum urea nitrogen and total protein concentration were determined. Response variables were analyzed using the GLM procedure of SAS program, using the animal as the experimental unit. The model included treatment, phenotype and their interaction. Heifers from treatment HMS+WCS had higher average body weight gain than the others. All supplements improved average body weight gain over CON. Heifers from treatment HMS+U performed better than HMS during July and August, which was consistent with higher plasma urea nitrogen in heifers from HMS+U. Total protein serum concentrations were not affected by treatments. The best production response was observed when WCS was used as the protein source.</subfield>
