Abstract To estimate puberty in female capybaras (Hydrochoerus hydrochaeris), were tested, independent as well as combined approaches, including: changes and genital differentiation, serum progestagens profile, and ovarian histology. Applying Huxley equation to different components of genital tract, maximum uterine relative growth rate was achieved when live weight ranged 15 - 20 kg. Likewise, duplication of uterine weight at 120 and 330 days of age coincided with a high degree of folicular differentiation and appearance of the first corpus luteum, respectively. This latter event was also associated to a significant increase in serum progestagens concentration. In conclusion, it seems likely that puberty in female capybaras is achieved when they are 10 to 12 months old.
