From the Paraguay River and affluents (Paraná System, Paraguay), Hypostomus plecostomus auctorum is identified as Hypostomus boulengeri (Eigenmann & Kennedy). Hypostomus piratatu sp. nov. and Hypostomus latifrons sp. nov. are described. These species are compared with others of the Paraná System. A lectotype of Hypostomus commersonii is designated.
